Waterford’s Harvest Festival set to host 100-mile Food Market with over 50% of Producers from Waterford
The team behind Waterford’s 2022 Harvest Festival are set to host a 100-mile food market as a means of supporting hyper-local and regional food producers in a more sustainable fashion. The market will take place over two days of the festival across Waterford City between September 9th to 11th 2022.
Speaking about the market and the concept behind it Harvest Festival Co-director Shona Dubois says, “Our goal is to support and showcase as many local food and drinks businesses who each hold the same sustainable values as the Harvest Festival.
Local food is fresher, it’s more nutritious and with fewer travel miles it has less of an impact on the environment. From a business perspective we are determined to support food and drinks producers for a better local and regional economy; so by creating a 100-mile food market for the Harvest Festival we hope to achieve as many of these goals as possible.
We are also very proud to share that over 50% of the food and drinks businesses at our 2022 market will be from within County Waterford; we have a thriving food and drinks scene in the city and county so we know that visitors to the festival will enjoy the best of the best.”
The Harvest Festival Market will traverse across Waterford’s wonderful squares and interconnecting streets, it will span from John Robert’s Square into Arundel Square onto Michael Street, and travel up Patrick’s Street and down to Barronstrand Street. With a focus on sustainability, the Festival Market includes an array of unique traders with plenty of fresh offerings and familiar faces will be at the festival on September 10th and 11th.
The festival is being supported by Waterford City & County Council and organised by GIY who are bringing sustainability right to the heart of the festivities, showcasing Waterford’s rich food heritage and celebrating the City’s diverse restaurants, and eateries and producers. The best of Waterford’s food and drink will be centre stage and there are a series of serious food talks for sides.
Taking place at venues and outdoors across Waterford City from September 9th to 11th 2022 there will be a ‘Food Done Right’ stage where food sustainability talks with some of the country’s most esteemed food writers, chefs, activists, journalists and business people, will be on offer. On the kitchen stage sponsored by Waterford’s Local Enterprise Office, there will be a host of Waterford’s very own food producers and Chefs who will all be sharing their best recipes and food tips. Visitors will enjoy meeting chefs and food producers from all across Waterford. In the vast Junior GIYer’s area which will take over Broad Street families will enjoy the opportunity to learn how to grow food through the seasons with Muireann Ní Chíobháin co-author of the GIY Know it Allmanac. There will be seed sowing, bug bingo, an art area, and the Nore Valley Mobile Farm will also be in the vicinity.
Special events will also be on offer including a restaurant trail, live music programmed by WAMA’s Trevor Darmody and Waterford will also be home to the Waterford Honey Championships and more.
