Irish Golfer Triumphs at 2021 Flogas Men’s Amateur Open
One of Ireland’s leading amateur golfers, Peter O’Keeffe from Douglas in Cork, is the 2021 Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open champion, his second time to claim the title. 93 players from 11 countries took part in the Open, held at the European Golf Club in Wicklow from 15-17 October 2021. Flogas has sponsored the competition since 2016.
Peter O’Keeffe is just the seventh player in history and the first since Padraig Harrington in 1995 to win the Irish Open and the Close in the same year. Speaking after his win, Peter said his second win at the Open is a career highlight. “I’m delighted. It played really hard, but I thought I played really well. When I won the AIG Close, I said I wanted to win this. Saying it is one thing, but doing it is another. I have to credit my coach Noel Fox. We had a great session earlier this week. I took what we were doing straight onto the course.”
Peter is delighted to add his name to the greats of the Irish amateur game. “It’ll take a while for that to sink in and the year in general, but I want to keep pushing on now, into next year.”
John Rooney, managing director, Flogas Ireland, said “ Congratulations to Peter O’Keeffe as the European Golf Club course is legendary for testing the physical and mental abilities of even the most experienced golfer. Peter’s talent and composure saw him through to a terrific, nail-biting win. Our thanks to the team at Golf Ireland and to all the competitors for giving us a great weekend of competitive golf.”
