Carton House Fairmont Golf Club achieves GEO Certification for sustainability
Carton House Fairmont Golf Club in Maynooth has been officially GEO Certified, achieving the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf. The international certification is earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating their commitment to make sustainability of central importance to their golf facility.
According to the GEO foundation for sustainable golf, among all sports, golf has a particularly close relationship with the environment and communities, and adopting a more sustainable approach is good for golf, from presenting a high-quality golf course and providing a memorable experience in natural surroundings to being as efficient as possible. At a broader level, it’s important that golf credibly demonstrates its commitment, and its social and environmental value – strengthening the sport’s image and reputation for the long term.
“Fairmont Carton House Golf Club is home to two 18-hole golf courses – a links and parkland. It also has a Special Area of Conservation status running through the courses.” said Maurice Bergin, GEO accredited independent verifier. “The courses are home to a wide variety of fauna and flora and the club takes particular care to protect and enhance habitats to secure and maintain them. As part of the greater Carton House Demesne, this is a magnificent golf destination which takes its environmental, social and heritage responsibilities seriously. The planned Maintenance Facility development will provide a world class operation.”
“With two magnificent Championship Golf Courses here at Carton House Fairmont, golf is at the heart of the estate and a huge attraction for guests from here and overseas. It’s a great achievement to be awarded this certification and I’m very proud of the focus and the work the team has put into their social and environmental value.” said Martin Mangan, General Manager of Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel. “We are looking forward to continuing to progress our sustainability journey, especially ahead of KPMG’s Women’s Irish Open 2024 which will take place here in August. This award is testament to all the hard work the team have put into making the golf resort somewhere beautiful to play on, for both nature and players.”
Surrounded by 1,100-acres of sweeping parkland, ancient woodlands lakes and the meandering River Rye in County Kildare, Carton House Fairmont is a respite from the outside world and yet is just 25 minutes from both Dublin Airport and city centre. Home to two championship courses, Carton House Golf offers exquisite views, impeccably maintained fairways, a convenient location and exceptional golfing experience. Choose from the classic parkland O’Meara or play on the soil many a legend has with the challenge of the inland links, Montgomerie.
