The Merrion is the first hotel in Ireland to sign a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement
The five star Merrion Hotel in Dublin has signed a new 21-month Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) with energy supplier Flogas Enterprise (the division of Flogas that works with industrial and commercial customers and renewable energy producers). This new CPPA will ensure that one of Ireland’s most prestigious hotels, The Merrion in Dublin, is powered by 100% renewable electricity harnessed from wind energy.
The Merrion is the first hotel in Ireland to sign a CPPA, which will allow the company to purchase renewable electricity directly from one of Ireland’s first ever wind farms, Cronalaght Wind Farm in Gweedore, Co. Donegal, opened in 1997.
This CPPA will meet 60% of The Merrion Hotel’s annual electricity requirements and support its sustainability ambitions to reduce its carbon emissions by 530 tonnes of CO2.
“This new Corporate Power Purchase Agreement with Flogas Enterprise is reflective of the Merrion Hotel’s ever-increasing focus on sustainability,” said Gerard Mountaine, Facilities Manager at the Merrion Hotel, Dublin.
“From the energy used to power our hotel building, to the food served in our restaurants, renewable electricity is a vital pillar in the Merrion’s sustainable journey and this new CPPA marks a significant milestone. By working with Flogas Enterprise, we’ll be making positive changes to become more energy efficient, reduce our energy bills and ensure the electricity supplied to The Merrion is certified as 100% renewable. The guarantees of origin realised from the agreement will also be utilised to support our Scope 2 emissions reporting,” he added.
“We’re energy matchmakers for large businesses who want to transition to more sustainable energy,” said Lauren Stewart, Customer Relationship Manager at Flogas Enterprise.
For over 20 years, we’ve a proven track record in bringing “firsts” of innovative and sustainable energy related products to the market. We were the first energy supplier in the market doing Corporate Power Purchase Agreements for 100% renewable electricity. Hundreds of large enterprises across Ireland have trusted us to assess their energy needs and find the right renewable project for them. Our mission is to one day power all large enterprises in Ireland with 100% sustainable energy. We look forward and are excited to work with the Merrion Hotel and help it achieve its sustainability targets,” she added.
The Government’s Climate Action Plan has set a target that 15% of electricity consumption should come from renewable electricity contracted under corporate power purchase agreements by 2030.
Part of DCC plc, Flogas Enterprise is a leading supplier in the market, bringing CPPA options to businesses and can offer expert advice and help to large organisations who want to make the switch. This is the latest example of a DCC business leading their customers to net zero with renewable energy.
