Spotlight on Ireland in Germany

Ireland was chosen as this year’s Country of Honour at the German President’s annual Citizens’ Festival, or Buergerfest. The two-day festival, which took place over the weekend, was a celebration of German volunteers and took place at Bellevue Palace, the official residence of President Steinmeier in Berlin.

Tourism Ireland had a pavilion at the festival. With the spotlight on Ireland and with around 18,000 guests and volunteers expected to have attended the festival, it was an excellent opportunity to promote Ireland as a superb destination for German holidaymakers. Visitors to the pavilion had a chance to win a trip to Ireland on a special Ireland slot machine and also enjoyed entertainment by singer-songwriter Shane Ó Fearghail.

President Steinmeier visited the Ireland pavilion on Friday, 26 August.

Nadine Lehmann, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Germany, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to have a presence at the German President’s Buergerfest 2022. With thousands of people attending the festival, it was a wonderful opportunity to spread the word about the many great reasons to visit Ireland.”

Germany is our third-largest source of visitors and in 2019 we welcomed 749,000 German visitors to the island of Ireland.

Nadine Lehmann continued: “Tourism Ireland has an extensive programme of promotions under way in Germany right throughout 2022. We’re encouraging German travellers to ‘press the Green Button’ and book Ireland for their next holiday.”
