New Dublin Coastal Trail will encourage visitors to explore unique experiences and attractions along Dublin’s coastline
- €700,000 Fáilte Ireland investment into accessible trail from Skerries to Killiney
- Medieval castles, sea swimming spots, cliff hikes and a UNESCO Biosphere all offer memorable experiences along Dublin’s coastline
Embracing Dublin’s unique mix of coastal and city experiences is now easier than ever with the launch of the new Dublin Coastal Trail. Developed by Fáilte Ireland in partnership with Dublin City County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council and Irish Rail, the trail will open up access to the Dublin coastline and encourage visitors to explore the towns, outdoor activities and attractions that lie within easy reach of the city centre.
Fáilte Ireland has invested €700,000 into the trail, which begins at Skerries and runs to Killiney, with signage installed in 11 towns and villages along the route, highlighting key visitor attractions and experiences along the way.
The Dublin Coastal Trail is the culmination of a 4-year orientation programme with key industry stakeholders and will enable visitors to better navigate and explore everything that Dublin city and county has to offer. Visitors will be able to walk, cycle or take a rail service along the route, with way-finding signs in 6 languages to ensure accessibility for international visitors. The new trail will encourage domestic and international tourists to explore Dublin’s coastal region, immersing themselves in the coastal villages and increasing dwell time in the region.
Covid 19 accelerated the demand for destinations that incorporate natural heritage and outdoor experiences, and the development of the Dublin Coastal Trail encourages visitors to explore the unique coastal towns and villages and engage with the wide variety of experiences on offer such as taking a boat tour on the bay, sampling local food or discovering a new location with a guided tour. The trail takes in a Medieval Castle at Malahide, cliff hikes in Killiney and the UNESCO Biosphere at Bull Island. Showcasing these coastal locations, their proximity to the city centre, their accessible experiences and local authenticity will further secure Dublin’s position as a must-visit destination.

In highlighting the connection between city and coast, we are delighted to remind locals of, and welcome visitors to the wide range of scenic features we have bordering our beautiful Dublin Bay; whether it be the Bull Island Nature Reserve, a haven of local and visiting wildlife, the cultivated charms of St. Anne’s Park and Rose Gardens, or the historically rich treasure trove of Sandymount Strand, the Great South Wall and the Poolbeg Lighthouse.”
Commenting on the launch, Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin TD said: “Unique and memorable experiences lie at the heart of great tourism destinations. The new Dublin Coastal Trail will not only help visitors discover and experience the diverse range of cultural and historical attractions, outdoor activities and stunning nature along Dublin’s coastline, it will also strengthen the appeal of Dublin as a destination to new markets and demographics both internationally and at home in Ireland.”

Improved visitor orientation from the city and out to the Dublin coastline will crucially enable visitors to better immerse themselves in local experiences which will spread the economic benefits of Dublin tourism across a wider geographical area.”

We are delighted that Fingal has been able to partner with Fáilte Ireland on the development of the Dublin Coastal Trail and the opportunity it brings for us to showcase some of the most stunning views going and to highlight an area rich in history, natural beauty and man-made heritage.
“The easily walkable trail means visitors and local residents alike will be able to discover some hidden gems right across the County whilst also enjoying the fantastic benefits of being in the great outdoors. What’s more is that it’s all readily accessible from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, making this a welcome tourist attraction that will not only help boost the local economy but also support the health and wellbeing of those taking in the memorable views.”
Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Cllr. Lettie Mc Carthy added: “Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is delighted to partner with Fáilte Ireland on the development of the Dublin Coastal Trail which will highlight the range of coastal activities and experiences we have on offer in Dún Laoghaire, from our historic harbour to the heritage attractions. Dun Laoghaire is where visitors can access the sea at many bathing points, enjoy scenic views and guided boat tours.
We’ve seen a significant upward trend in people enjoying outdoor activities over the two years and we know the appeal of exploring the outdoors will continue to grow post-COVID19 so it’s fantastic that visitors will now be encouraged to explore the coastal towns and villages that lie within easy reach of Dublin’s city centre.”
