Tourism Ireland board meets in Limerick
No.1 Pery Square in Limerick city was the venue for the March board meeting of Tourism Ireland, which took place today (Thursday, 24 March). The board members took the opportunity to meet with representatives of the local tourism industry, to discuss activity to restart overseas tourism to Ireland this year and the extensive promotional programme which Tourism Ireland is undertaking to highlight Limerick and Clare, the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland around the world in 2022.
Speaking after the board meeting, Niall Gibbons, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “We were delighted to be in Limerick city for this month’s board meeting and to have the chance to meet with representatives of the Limerick and Clare tourism industry and to hear directly about their business. It also gave us the opportunity to discuss our plans to restart overseas tourism to Ireland this year and the extensive programme of activity which Tourism Ireland is undertaking around the world, to promote Limerick and Clare and Ireland to prospective visitors.”
Limerick and Clare feature prominently on Tourism Ireland’s international website Ireland.com, which attracted more than 23 million unique views in 2019. Limerick and Clare’s landscape and attractions are also highlighted through Tourism Ireland’s social media platforms, including Facebook (Tourism Ireland has around 4.68 million fans worldwide), Instagram (1.06 million followers), Twitter (over 542,000 followers) and YouTube.
Tourism Ireland is rolling out a new ‘twinning’ initiative this year, which involves overseas markets ‘twinning with’ a specific region or area in Ireland. The United States is ‘twinning’ with Limerick and Clare, so Tourism Ireland in the United States is placing a special focus on both counties this year. For example, last week, Tourism Ireland invited Lindsay Myers from NBC’s Access Hollywood show – which has around 1 million viewers – to broadcast from the St Patrick’s Day parade on O’Connell Street in Limerick. She also recorded segments for her show at King John’s Castle, the Treaty City Brewery and the Gaelic Grounds.
