Leaders from across the spectrum of aviation inspired the girls to imagine their futures in aviation.
In celebration of Girls in Aviation Day, United Airlines has partnered with Dublin Airport to offer a unique experience for 28 girls for a behind-the-scenes look at the airport, showcasing the broad range of career pathways available in the aviation sector. For the second consecutive year, second-year students from St David’s College in Artane, a mixed secondary school in Dublin, were selected to take part in the initiative.
Participants toured key areas, including the fire station, and visited the Airport Operations Centre – the central coordination hub responsible for overseeing daily airport activity, passenger flow and aircraft movements around the clock. The students also explored the interior of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, including the cockpit.
Leaders from across the spectrum of aviation, including United Operations and Sales leadership, alongside Dublin Airport Marketing, Retail, Social Media and Content specialists, shared their career journeys and valuable advice, inspiring the girls to imagine what their own futures in aviation, STEM and transportation could look like.
“Girls in Aviation is all about exposure, inspiration and education,” said Roger Berry, General Manager, Dublin, United Airlines. “The aviation sector offers a wide variety of career opportunities beyond piloting, and we want young women to experience first hand that careers in the industry are both achievable and fulfilling. From airport operations and inflight services to customer service and leadership roles, there are many exciting paths for the next generation to explore, and it was great to see this acknowledged by the girls here today.”
“Dublin Airport is proud to support Girls in Aviation Day and to work alongside United Airlines to inspire the next generation of talent,” said Gary McLean, Managing Director, Dublin Airport. “Aviation offers a wide range of exciting and rewarding careers, from engineering and operations to technology, sustainability and leadership. By giving young people the chance to meet role models, see behind the scenes and learn more about our industry, we hope to encourage more girls to consider a future in aviation and to see that there are great opportunities to learn and grow a career at Dublin Airport.”
Since 2016, uIMPACT, United Airlines’ Business Resource Group for empowering women and their allies, has partnered with Women in Aviation International (WAI), a non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring women and girls to pursue careers in aviation and aerospace. Thanks to this collaboration, United has organised events, such as the one held in Dublin to impact girls and motivate them to pursue careers in the airline industry.
