Aer Lingus College Football Classic forges new transatlantic connections with record-breaking broadcast figures
Ireland-US relations emerged as the real winner from the 2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic, with a closely contested game between Texas Christian University and the University of North Carolina concluding a week of significant engagement among Ireland, Texas, and North Carolina.
On the field, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels secured a narrow 15-10 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs at the Aviva Stadium. The result remained in doubt until the closing moments, providing a gripping opening to the 2026 US college football season.
The most-watched Aer Lingus College Football Classic ever
The game was broadcast live across the United States on ESPN and Disney Plus as well as free-to-air in Ireland on TG4. It attracted an average US audience of 4.9 million viewers on ESPN, with a high of 5.8 million. All inclusive, this was the most-watched Aer Lingus College Football Classic ever, once again placing Dublin and Ireland at the centre of the American sporting conversation.
However, the impact of the week extended far beyond Saturday’s result. 18,377 International visitors from 40 different countries, of which 15,252 were from the United States, descended on Dublin, joined by university leaders, political and civic representatives, business executives, academics, students, medical specialists, alumni, marching bands and supporters.
Throughout the week, Ireland hosted an extensive programme of 42 business, education, tourism, cultural, and community events involving TCU, UNC, the City of Fort Worth, the State of Texas, Chapel Hill, and the State of North Carolina. The programme included engagement between Irish and US business and civic leaders; meetings involving universities and Ireland’s education, healthcare and life-sciences sectors; collaborative student projects; tourism and investment discussions; cultural performances; community initiatives; and an Ireland-US CEO luncheon attended by more than 459 business, government and university leaders.
Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke said:
“Saturday’s event showed the importance of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in strengthening Ireland-US relations at sporting, economic and social levels. The game brought huge numbers of American visitors to our shores and the connections made at the many business and tourism-related events held last week will generate investment in the years to come. I am already looking forward to next year’s fixture and am delighted that my Department continues to be a partner in bringing the Classic to Ireland.”
Padraic O’Kane, Co-Founder of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, said:
“North Carolina won an extremely close football game, but Ireland-US relations were the real winner from the week. The game provided the platform to bring together leaders from Ireland, Texas and North Carolina and to create new relationships across business, tourism, education, healthcare, government and culture.
“That is what ‘Much More Than a Game’ is all about. College football brings people to Ireland, but its lasting value lies in the relationships formed, the ideas shared, and the partnerships that continue long after the final whistle.”
He added: “We thank TCU and the people of Fort Worth and Texas, and UNC and the people of Chapel Hill and North Carolina, for embracing Ireland so warmly. We look forward to seeing the friendships and partnerships formed during the week continue to grow.”
UNC Head Coach Bill Belichick praised the experience and the welcome the Tar Heels received;
“It was a great experience for all of our student-athletes to come over here and play in Dublin. It’s a great city,” he said.
Belichick also praised the travelling Carolina supporters, describing the atmosphere at the Aviva Stadium as “awesome” and saying that it “almost felt like a home game”.
UNC Chancellor Lee H. Roberts used the week to highlight the deep historical connections between Ireland and North Carolina, as well as the potential for further cooperation in education, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and life sciences.
UNC’s participation extended well beyond football. Representatives from its schools of medicine, pharmacy and business met Irish education and industry leaders, while students participated in academic, cultural, sporting and community programmes across Dublin.
TCU Chancellor Daniel W. Pullin led an equally ambitious programme focused on higher education, business, medicine, tourism and investment. TCU students worked alongside students from UNC and Irish universities on business projects presented at Google’s Dublin headquarters. Fort Worth’s civic, tourism and business representatives also used the week to establish new relationships and introduce the city to an Irish and international audience.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin welcomed the visiting universities and civic delegations, while representatives of Fort Worth and North Carolina participated in events throughout the city.
The 2026 game was the fifth consecutive annual Aer Lingus College Football Classic staged in Dublin. The four games held between 2022 and 2025 generated a combined direct economic impact of more than €500 million for Ireland, with an independent assessment of the 2026 game expected in the coming months.
2027 Aer Lingus College Football Classic,
Attention will now turn to the 2027 Aer Lingus College Football Classic, when the University of Pittsburgh Panthers and the Wisconsin Badgers travel to Dublin for the next chapter in the series. Representatives from both universities attended this year’s programme, beginning the relationship-building and handover process ahead of their arrival next August. Ther game is scheduled to take place in Aviva Stadium on Saturday, August 28, 2027.

It is now an established transatlantic platform through which Ireland can build lasting relationships with major US universities, cities, states, businesses and communities. The final score on Saturday was UNC 15, TCU 10 – but the lasting result is an even stronger relationship between Ireland and the United States.”
