August sees the return of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic to the Aviva Stadium for the first U.S. college football game of the 2026 season, known as ‘Week Zero’. The highly anticipated match between Texas Christian University’s (TCU) Horned Frogs and University of North Carolina’s (UNC) Tar Heels will take place on Saturday, 29th August at 5pm Irish Time. TCU’s Horned Frogs takes on UNC’s Tar Heels
TCU, hailing from Fort Worth, Texas will serve as the home team when they take the field, showcasing the vibrant culture, pride and traditions that make Texas famous around the world. TCU’s Horned Frogs will take on UNC’s Tar Heels led by Head Coach Bill Belichick. Belichick is considered by many as the greatest coach in all of professional sports as he won an NFL record of eight Super Bowls, with six of those as Head Coach for the New England Patriots. Belichick is responsible for recruiting and crafting NFL superstars including legendary quarterback Tom Brady. Travelling with UNC will be Co. Down native, Adam McCann Gibbs, the freshman punter who could potentially make his American College Football debut on home soil.
The game, which will be the fifth time TCU and UNC’s Football teams have faced each other dating back to 1940, will be broadcast live on ESPN to an estimated U.S. audience of 4+ million and domestically by TG4. This will be the second time that TG4 has broadcast the Aer Lingus College Football Classic live in Ireland.
14,000 American Fans Expected
Over 14,000 American fans are expected to make the journey to the nation’s capital. Locals have the opportunity to secure their place alongside the travelling U.S. and European fans on Ticketmaster for what promises to be an unforgettable event.
Fans can experience the traditional razzmatazz ahead of the game with tailgating events and pep rallies, including the famous band march from the RDS to the Aviva Stadium on the day of the game.
This year, both universities are travelling with over 130 members each from their band and cheer teams, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
The Aer Lingus College Football Classic has consistently boosted Ireland’s economy, according to Grant Thornton’s Post Game Economic Impact Reports. The vast majority of U.S. visitors are scheduled to stay an average of seven nights, visiting an average of three destinations throughout the island showcasing the event’s significant tourism draw.
The first four games in the current series have delivered an economic boost of €514 million as per Grant Thornton’s Post Game Economic Impact Reports. This economic impact underscores the value of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic initiative, enhancing tourism, supporting the local economy, and facilitating the creation of international business and education connections.

Much More Than A Game
The clash between the Horned Frogs and Tar Heels is much more than a game, it is a weeklong celebration that extends across Dublin City.
Drawing on inspiration from College Football tradition, Dublin will be home to pep rallies and tailgating for both teams with an Irish twist. Guinness sponsored tailgating pubs will be active all week including team specific pubs as well as general tailgating pubs near the stadium and across the city bringing the spirit of college football to Dublin Town – all information is available on the official game app. Other activities include high school volleyball games taking place in Maynooth University, GAA clinics for both teams and as well as a highly anticipated women’s soccer match between Shelbourne FC and UNC in Tolka Park on Friday 28th of August.
Additionally, an exciting schedule of community, political, business and academic events are planned in the week leading up to the game. One such event is the Ireland-US CEO Club, which is set to attract over 450 Irish and U.S. CEOs to this prestigious event.
