CSO Figures for Quarter 4 2018


The CSO figures for Tourism & Travel, Quarter 4, 2018 have been released. The key results are:

Overseas trips to Ireland increased by 6.3% for the period October to December 2018:

-The number of overseas trips to Ireland by non­residents increased from 2.271 million in Quarter 4 2017 to 2.413 million trips in Quarter 4 2018 (+6.3%).

- The number of nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers decreased by 3.1% in Quarter 4 2018 compared with the same period of the previous year, down from 15.6 million to 15.1 million.

- The average duration of overseas trips to Ireland dropped from 6.9 nights in Quarter 4 2017 to 6.3 nights in Quarter 4 2018.

- Total tourism and travel earnings from overseas travellers to Ireland increased by 1.7% between Quarter 4 2017 and Quarter 4 2018, increasing from €1,377 million to €1,400 million. When fares are excluded, total expenditure increased from €1,046 million to €1,047 million, an increase of 0.1% over the period.

Trips by Irish residents overseas:

- In Quarter 4 2018, the number of trips made by Irish residents overseas increased by 5.8%, from 1.756 million trips in Quarter 4 2017 to 1.858 million.

- The average duration of overseas trips made by Irish residents stayed the same at 6.0 nights in Quarter 4 2017 and Quarter 4 2018.

- Total tourism and travel expenditure by Irish residents overseas increased by 10.5%, up from €1,107 million in Quarter 4 2017 to €1,223 million in Quarter 4 2018. When all fares are included, total expenditure on overseas trips increased by 8.8%, from €1,394 million to €1,517 million.

Overseas trips to Ireland:

- In 2018, a total of 10.616 million overseas trips were made to Ireland compared to 9.932 million trips in 2017 (+6.9%).

- Overseas travellers to Ireland spent a total of 70.9 million nights in the country in 2018 compared to 68.7 million nights the previous year (+3.3%).

- Overseas travel to Ireland generated earnings of €6,874 million in 2018 compared to €6,485 million in 2017 (+6.0%). When fares are excluded, total expenditure in 2018 was €5,149 million, an increase of 5.6% on 2017.

Trips by Irish residents overseas:

- Irish residents made a total of 8.276 million overseas trips in 2018 compared to 7.939 million trips in 2017 (+4.2%). These trips lasted an average of 7.2 nights in 2018, this remained the same as in 2017.

- Total tourism and travel expenditure on overseas travel by Irish residents increased by 8.1% to €5,639 million in 2018. When fares are included, total expenditure by Irish residents on overseas trips rose from €6,594 million in 2017 to €7,062 million (+7.1%).
