Celebrations All Round In The Talbot Wexford, As Gordon Kavanagh Wins “Employee Of The Year Award Fo
There were huge celebrations in the Sunny South East last week as Talbot Wexford employee, Gordon Kavanagh - Assistant Bar Manager, took home the illustrious award of Employee of the Year for the South East, at the Irish Hotels Federation Awards. The Employee of the Year Award recognises and acknowledges the hard work and dedication of staff members in the hospitality industry, excluding management, and shows appreciation to those individuals who play an integral part in the smooth running of their respective hotels. The South East Branch of the IHF has 68 members in total, taking in the counties of Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Waterford and Tipperary, and this is the second year running that the prestigious Employee of the Year Award for the South East has been presented.
Gordon, a native of New Ross, Co. Wexford, has been a dedicated and loyal member of the Talbot Wexford team for eight years. He is a welcoming face for all Talbot Wexford guests who frequent the hotel’s stylish Ballast Bank Bar to sample his expertly mixed drinks. South East Branch IHF members selected staff to put forward for this coveted award, with Gordon Kavanagh nominated on behalf of the Talbot Wexford. Mr Kavanagh was the triumphant winner, fighting off the stiff competition from nine other shortlisted finalists at the awards ceremony, which was held in the Newpark Hotel Kilkenny, last Wednesday 5th December. The challenging task of whittling down nominations to just ten finalists was bestowed on the esteemed judging panel, which this year consisted of Mr Michael Vaughan, former IHF president and owner of the Vaughan Lodge Hotel, Co. Clare and Mr Ray Cullen, Head of Department of Languages, Tourism and Hospitality in Waterford Institute of Technology. These shortlisted finalists were then put through a stringent 30-minute interview, covering topics such as career to date, reasons for choosing a career in hospitality and ambition for the future, following which the judges decided upon their 2018 winner.
Speaking with delight at the awards ceremony last week, worthy winner Gordon Kavanagh, Assistant Bar Manager Talbot Wexford commented, “I am overwhelmed and honoured to have been chosen as the IHF Employee of the Year. What a recognition!” Gordon continued, “There were nine other really strong candidates and I am truly grateful to everyone involved, not only to be nominated, but indeed to win such an award. Onwards and Upwards!” As a result of this tremendous success Gordon will now be put forward for the National IHF Awards in Killarney in 2019. Robert Millar, Area General Manager of the Talbot Collection Wexford, commented with pride on his employee’s success, “Gordon’s passion and commitment to the hospitality industry is truly admirable. He has such an infectious positive energy that he shares with customer and fellow colleagues alike. Gordon’s philosophy is to give our customers the King, Queen, Prince and Princess treatment, ensuring they have the most memorably experience and return time and time again. He is an ambassador for us throughout the community of Wexford and for the Talbot Collection as a whole. We are extremely proud of Gordon and would like to congratulate him again on this amazing accolade”.
