Hotel Giant Leads The Way In Engaging Employees
Irish owned and run hospitality giant, PREM Group which owns and operates over 50 hotels across Ireland, the UK, Belgium and France has rolled out an impressive HR programme which aims to provide an opportunity for group wide entrepreneurialism at all levels within the organisation. The programme, called ‘ENGAGE’ is the brain child of the group’s HR Manager (UK & Ireland), Sarah Marr and works by inviting employees to submit ideas and suggestions on how business, services, products and employee well-being can be improved across the group.
It is an open platform and is available to all staff in every hotel within the group from kitchen personnel, to admin staff to maintenance and sales teams. Every single employee is invited to get involved in a team and submit their proposals. HR Manager, Sarah Marr said, “At the start of 2018 every employee who wanted to be involved in ENGAGE joined a team. Every team then received a handbook and workbook which provided them with templates to follow as they progressed their project. Employees were asked to look at their daily work and come up with ideas they believe will have an impact in one or a combination of areas. The areas in which we invited employee suggestions included CSR, improving the working environment, customer satisfaction, increasing revenue and sales and cost reduction. All team members were given the opportunity to undertake two online learning programmes to support their participation in the programme – one on team work and a second on presentation skills training to assist with the presentations they would make to their Regional COO which took place last month.”
She went on to say, “Essentially, ENGAGE is a competition which recognises that our employees have great ideas and it pushes ideas from the ground up. The competition has a cash prize fund of €1,000 for the best idea from a group or individual and is open to all properties within the PREM Group.”
Each project is presented to the local General Manager (GM) first and the GM of each property then chose their favourites from their property who then presented to the regional COO of PREM Ireland, PREM UK or PREM Continental Europe, as appropriate. The COOs then selected eight finalists who present to a panel of judges include PREM Group CEO Jim Murphy, Dick Burke, PREM Group Non-Executive Director and Natasha Kinsella, Regional Skills Manager at Regional Skills Forum Dublin. The 8 projects include representation from each of 3 regions Ireland, the UK and Continental Europe. The winners will be announced a glitzy awards night at Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort in Blessington, Co. Wicklow on the 3rd of October.
Jim Murphy, CEO of PREM said, “The objective of ENGAGE is to provide an opportunity to those within the PREM workforce who don’t necessarily get to regularly air their business enhancement ideas to do just that in a structured manner that is recognised by the wider group. We want to publicly recognise hard work, great ideas and encourage an entrepreneurial culture within the group. We hope that this will positively impact on job satisfaction across the group as well as encouraging people in our industry to consider working with PREM. We want to work with great people who are as passionate about hospitality as we are.”
