Great Carvery Month Celebrates Seasonal Summer Food
This June we celebrate Great Carvery Month in conjunction with the KNORR Great Carvery competition.
As pubs and hotels across the country prepare for a busy high season, carvery menus adapt for the summer, while still providing those quintessential Irish dishes to tourists who have travelled from overseas.
Last year’s Provincial Munster Pub Winner; Kirby’s Brogue Inn, located close to the Aqua Dome in Tralee, a popular attraction among Irish holidaymakers, is a family orientated venue. Kevin Cotter, owner of Kirby’s Brogue Inn advises that “We have a great family trade, our staff go above and beyond to make sure parents and children alike enjoy their meal, asking the children to pick out exactly what they’d like. That’s why carvery works so well because they can see what they’re ordering.”
“We serve five different mains each day and cater for dietary requirements such as gluten-free options,” he added.
A carvery might seem like a heavy meal to have in the middle of summer but venues across Ireland will tailor their menu offering to suit their customers. Claire Moroney, Sales and Marketing Manager at the Galway Bay Hotel; 2017 Provincial Connacht Hotel Winner says, “We change our menu to provide fresh, seasonal produce. During the summer we’ll make sure to have lighter meats available like fish or chicken and some salad options.
“As we’ll have a lot of visitors from overseas, we’ll also make sure to have traditional Irish dishes available such as an Irish pie or Irish stew,” she added.
Entries for the 2018 KNORR Great Carvery competition are now open until June 30th. To enter simply complete an online entry form describing why your carvery is the best. The shortlisted nominees are informed on the 16th July. There is a total of 24 nominees with 3 in the pub category and 3 in the hotel category from each province. Those who have been nominated will be mystery dined. On the 10th September 8 provincial winners will be announced and on the 21st September the overall hotel and pub carvery of the year winners will be revealed. Each entry will receive a carvery entry pack and are entered into a draw to win an Apple iPad.
There are great prizes to be won at each stage from shortlisted nominees, provincial winners and overall winners. The overall pub and hotel winners will receive; 200,000 worth of UFS Chef Reward Points, a Wüsthof 7 Piece Silverpoint Roll Set, a special plaque and framed certificate to promote the win front of house and a chef jacket.
