Market Lane Restaurant & Bar, Cork City Awarded Bord Bia Just Ask Restaurant Of The Month

Located on Oliver Plunkett Street in the heart of Cork city, Market Lane Restaurant & Bar has been awarded Just Ask Restaurant of the Month for November. Owned by Conrad and Judy Howard and Tracy Corbett, this substantial two-storey restaurant and bar is the flagship business of the quality-led group that includes Orso Kitchen Bar, Castle Café at Blackrock Castle and Elbow Lane Brew & Smokehouse, all of which are doing so much to confirm Cork’s reputation for good food.

Currently in its eighth year, the Just Ask campaign has been wholeheartedly embraced by the restaurant trade. The campaign encourages diners to look for information on where food on their plate comes from and encourages chefs to profile their local suppliers on menus. Selected by renowned food writer Georgina Campbell in collaboration with Bord Bia, the Just Ask Restaurant of the Month rewards eateries across Ireland that exhibit best practice in showing transparency in the sourcing of the food on their menus.

According to Group Head Chef, Pamela Kelly-Gough, “Supporting local producers and suppliers ties in with a wider environmental commitment. Where possible we use ingredients from The English Market and local artisan producers to make up our menu, which has a wide range of traditional offerings, in addition to coeliac and vegetarian dishes and a healthy kids menu. We include all of our sourcing information on our website, with an interactive map and a comprehensive catalogue of suppliers.”

Tom Durcan Meats and Bresnans Victuallers in The English Market supply fresh beef and poultry, along with free range pork from Crowes Farm in Tipperary; Blasket lamb from Kerry and duck from Silverhill Farm in Co. Monaghan. Seafood is supplied by English Market based Ballycotton Seafood and K. O’Connell. Greenspace in East Cork supply fresh salad leaves, herbs and micro salads. Farmhouse cheese suppliers include Coolea and Ardsallagh from Cork, in addition to Cooleeney Farm in Tipperary; Mike’s Fancy Cheese in Co. Down and St. Tola Goat’s Cheese in Clare. Ice-cream is sourced from Baldwin’s in Co. Waterford.
