Hotel Doolin Co. Clare Is Awarded Bord Bia Just Ask Restaurant Of The Month

Hotel Doolin in Co. Clare has been awarded Just Ask Restaurant of the Month for September. This privately-owned hotel has a vibrant local food sourcing philosophy that has earned it a reputation well beyond Doolin, spearheaded by the energetic and inspiring Donal Minihane, who has been the General Manager of Hotel Doolin since 2011. Currently in its eighth year, the Just Ask campaign has been wholeheartedly embraced by the restaurant trade. The campaign encourages diners to look for information on where food on their plate comes from and encourages chefs to profile their local suppliers on menus.

Selected by renowned food writer Georgina Campbell in collaboration with Bord Bia, the Just Ask Restaurant of the Month rewards eateries across Ireland that exhibit best practice in showing transparency in the sourcing of the food on their menus.According to head Chef, Danny Craughwell, “At Hotel Doolin we have a passion for delivering original wholesome and inventive food with local organic produce and by using homegrown ingredients. North Clare is a haven for independent, artisan producers and we are blessed to be surrounded by such an abundance of suppliers that supply us with quality produce.”

Fifth generation butcher Noel O’Connor of O’Connor Meats in Limerick supplies beef from the pastures of North Clare and lamb from Kilshanny. Fresh seafood is supplied daily by Garrihy’s Seafood in Doolin and smoked salmon is supplied by the famous Birgitta Hedin Curtin of Burren Smokehouse. All vegetables are supplied by Richardson’s Foods in Limerick, supported by regular advice on seasonality and availability of local produce. Local milkman Mick Johnston supplies fresh milk and cream and cheese is supplied by artisan Irish farmhouse cheese producers. “Danny is a keen fisherman, a pig-farmer, a connoisseur of all things foraged and a BBQ fanatic and once you know that, you can see where he’s coming from in all the hotel’s food operations,” commented Georgina Campbell. “As well as selling some of Ireland’s best craft beers on draft, they even have their own Doolliner Beer range and offer a tasting of three beers on an Irish craft beer board, with one to match for whiskeys too. A remarkable place all round.”
